Since 2002, Dental Schools have been training all Dental Hygienists and Therapists in administering Local Anaesthetics. Provided you have been suitably trained in administering Local Anaesthetics & Fluoride application, you can apply to us for a Patient Group Directive. 

PGDs by law must be assessed at regular intervals (yearly) for safety reasons. 

As a registered professional working under PGD, you must ensure that you keep up to date with CPD on Local Anaesthetics & Fluoride.

You can only provide PGD treatment in practices where you have authorisation from the principle and/ or authorising manager.

CURRENTLY PRIVATE PGDs ARE ONLY VALID IN:

• ENGLAND WHERE THE DENTAL PRACTICE IS REGISTERED WITH THE CQC.

• NORTHERN IRELAND WHERE THE DENTAL PRACTICE IS REGISTERED WITH THE REGULATION AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT AUTHORITY.

• WALES WHERE THE DENTAL PRACTICE IS REGISTERED WITH HEALTH INSPECTORATE WALES.  

• SCOTLAND WHERE THE FULLY PRIVATE DENTAL PRACTICE IS REGISTERED WITH HEALTHCARE IMPROVEMENT SCOTLAND. PRACTICES INSPECTED BY THE LOCAL HEALTH BOARD CANNOT USE PGDS
