What is a PGD?
A Patient Group Direction is a written instruction that has been developed and signed off by Dental professionals and a Pharmacist. They allow a suitably trained and competent health care professional to supply & / or administer certain Prescription Only Medicines (POMs) directly to a patient without them necessarily seeing a prescriber.
In 2013, the General Dental Council granted Direct Access to suitably trained Dental Care Professionals (DCPs). There are still a number of barriers that stop DCP’s from providing their full scope of practice. Recent changes in radiography prescribing have helped to resolve these, however the final hurdle is Local Anaesthetic and Fluoride prescriptions and we have the answer!
Currently, patients must still see a Dentist to prescribe Local Anaesthetic & Fluoride for Dental Hygienist & Therapist administration.
With a Patient Group Direction you can be a truly autonomous clinician. You will also indirectly benefit your patient by negating the need to see a Dentist for prescriptions.
DentalDirectives are able to provide you with private Patient Group Directions. You will be able to use your preferred local anaesthetic solution, giving you the freedom to provide the appropriate direct patient care as you see fit.
